Rental car insurance

Considering getting a rental vehicle but not sure how safe you are in doing so?

In fact you’re probably okay. Most insurance policies already offer car protection to rental vehicles (with certain restrictions as to which country they’re covered in – be sure to check your policy). This will provide your coverage if you get into some kind of accident or suffer an injury while operating a rental vehicle.

There are other forms of coverage available on this kind of car as well. There are sometimes booking policies with the company that allow you to attach an optional form of insurance, though these may be waived if you already have your own policies. Always ask if their policies cover the same things as your own so you won’t have to pay more money than necessary when getting a rented vehicle.

When getting a rental be sure to ask the following questions about their rental car insurance:

• How much will the deductible cost?
• Does my personal policy only cover the value of the car listed on my policy? If it’s so you need to compare the value of that car to what it would cost to replace the vehicle you’re renting.
• Does the policy cover theft and/or collision damage? (Most do, and it can readily be substituted for that given by renting insurance.)
• What’s the geographic coverage afforded by the rental car insurance? If you’re going outside your country you’ll want to know this more than anything, for if you go too far and get into an accident you may find yourself not covered.
• How much coverage for liability does my current policy hold? If it’s only the bare minimum for your car you probably won’t be able to cover the costs of replacing a rental, let alone pay for any damages you might incur on others.

In the end it’s completely up to you whether or not you’ll get the optional policy offered by the rental company, as they’re not mandatory so long as you can provide proof of your own coverage.
